Gaza ceasefire live, Israeli hostages due to be released as Trump says ‘war is over’ and flies to the Middle East. Tens of thousands of Palestinians from Fox headed back to the northern Gaza Strip yesterday. As a ceasefire brokered by the US took effect in a deal that raised hopes for Israel’s war with Hamas. All remaining hostages will be released within days. But questions remain about who will govern Gaza, as Israeli forces are weak and Hamas will be unarmed, as called for by US President Trump’s ceasefire plan.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who signaled a unilateral end to the truce in March, warned that Israel could renew its aggression if Hamas does not lay down its arms, the army confirmed. The ceasefire began yesterday, and the remaining 48 hostages, about 20 of whom are still alive, will be released by Monday. The Palestinians said heavy shelling and shelling of Gaza had largely stopped yesterday. Troops Announced President Trump said earlier this week that he plans to leave for the Middle East sometime tomorrow. To discuss this further on Sunday, what can we expect from this trip? David Toferi. He is a

Foreign policy adviser to Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. And from 2006 to 2007, he served as the State Department's Rule of Law Coordinator for Iraq at the U.S. Embassy. In Baghdad. Thank you very much for joining us on Live Now this morning. From Fox, we appreciate it. Thank you for having me. Very broadly here. What can we expect from this trip by President Trump? As we see the ceasefire take effect tomorrow, who will he talk to? What can we expect on this

Trip? Well, it's always hard to predict what President Trump is going to do. And this trip too. There's some intrigue around that, but what I would expect is that they're going there to meet with the leaders of Egypt, Israel, Qatar, and some of the officials from other countries.

Who was involved? With the United States mediating and ultimately achieving the ceasefire. That is, they'll get partial credit for their role in accomplishing that ceasefire and deserve credit. But what you would hope is that President Trump and the Trump.

Administration will use the trip to focus on trying to resolve some of these unresolved issues. The beginning of this segment mentioned whether Hamas is going. When are they going to demilitarize? What's going to happen with

Hamas? The leaders, are they going to stay in Gaza? Are they going to be removed? How is Gaza going to be governed? It can't be governed by Gaza. So President Trump has talked about a peace committee. The WHO

Will be on this peace committee. What is it going to be? Its authority? All of these things need to be worked on, and then how do we rebuild Gaza? How do we provide for the basic humanitarian needs of the 2 million people who have?

Been in Gaza, and their homes and buildings and offices have been. Destroyed, okay. And I was just going to put an animation here, oh, that came out of here because of the disruption that's been seen in Gaza. This

It is still alive, look, but I want to digress from what you just mentioned. President Trump is going to be up front with these major challenges in addressing them. Humanitarian reconstruction efforts during his visit. Yes. It is,

You know, we remember it. This is not the first ceasefire there. There was a ceasefire in January that President Biden negotiated, but President Trump and the Trump team were involved in pushing for it. The ceasefire went into place and pretty much stayed in place.

6 weeks, and hostages were released during that time. Things that were expected with it. The ceasefire happened, but what? It didn't happen; didn't they negotiate these unresolved issues?
It should have been resolved. So that the ceasefire could be implemented

Phase 2. And then the ceasefire broke down. And so should the Trump administration and other officials in the countries that helped mediate and accomplish this be concerned about this ceasefire
Being outside of all of that. As well as what you mentioned, working on how to meet the humanitarian needs of the people.

Gaza. That requires more deliveries of food, medicine. Access to clean water and shelter. You've touched on that a little bit, but I really want to. Talk about strategy.

We can see here with President Trump, because as we are saying here, one of the unanswered questions is whether Hamas will make the future governance of the past uncertain, and how to disarm.

What approach can President Trump take when these topics are discussed? I think 1 approach is to make sure that these issues are not being resolved just by Israel, but sure by other Arab countries.

Especially neighboring countries. Uh, the region, oh, Jordan. Egypt is involved in helping to find these issues and solutions, and they also express their position that Hamas cannot be. In charge of

Gaza in the future. But you also have to find a way to fulfill the wishes.

For the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, that they choose their own leaders, and the people should remember that while Hamas.

Was elected. There have been no elections in Gaza for almost 18 years. You know, this Hamas government was not truly representative of the people. Gaza finally has you.

Thinking about how you are going to hold elections?

Completely done? Destroyed. How are you going to be safe? Gaza? So that you can hold free and fair elections, and how are you doing? Make sure that these elections do not result in any former Hamas officials being involved in the October 7 attacks that brought them back to leadership positions. David, I want to share this post with you and our viewers from here.

Israel Defense Forcesthey're saying the IDF is preparing. For the return of the hostages, with the ceasefire coming into effect after more than 2years of intense operations in Gaza, the IDF is finally preparing to receive the remaining.

48 hostages. When we talk about this, how significant is this development in the broader context of Middle Eastern diplomacy? This is a very significant and very important goal, and it was always a goal of both Israel and the United States to get the hostages back. The families of the

Hostages, especially the families of the hostages um who are still in captivity. Have been very vocal and listened to them as they should. Uh, about what their view is, they really wanted to have this ceasefire. So this is really a precursor to the other agreements in the

Ceasefire, and Hamas needs to meet the deadline. The deadline i Monday. There's been some talk that it could be Tuesday. We know that working out the justthe, simple Logistics of where to drop off. The

Hostage is, and how to secure that area, and how to make sure that they're returned over. Appropriately, they are really hard, and sometimes that also can delay um the release of the hostages. But hopefully that won't happen here. What is the perception of?presidentTrump's upcoming trip therein the Middle East?

Are you able to touch a little bit further on that for us? Well, I think probably most people are happy that President Trump is coming. Puts more attention on. The situation, and hopefully,

It will turn the attention of the other leaders around the world. Who needs support for this? Ceasefire, and also need to provide the money and resources to support the humanitarian needs of Gaza. David, is there anything else that you'd like to add about this? Whether that be, you know, the security aspect of President Trump's visit, or anything else that you think we missed before we let you go here. Well, security will be complicated, but obviously, the Secret Service.

Understands that there's going to be, it's going to require a lot of security to protect him and the other leaders that he meets with. This is going to be logistically difficult. Trip, there will be a lot of media there as well, but um looking forward to seeing what happens. All right, David, to free. Thank you so much for joining us live. Now from Fox, Bright and early this morning. We do appreciate it. Sure, thank you. Leaving you now with that live, look there out of Gazathis morning as we step away for a commercial.
